The HSAB is a major project within the university's 10-year facilities plan. It will house academic, administrative, clinical, and research space for the following departments: Communication Sciences and Disorders, Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Sciences, and Health and Human Physiology.
The building will be closed to the public from December 20, 2023 to August 9, 2024 due to construction equipment and delivery access.

The historic Field House, built in 1927, is the home of the Department of Health and Human Physiology and most of its curricular programming. In addition to hosting countless university athletic events over many decades, the Field House has long housed sport, exercise and fitness, and recreation programs for the university. Conveniently located on the edge of the University of Iowa's health sciences campus west of the Iowa River, the Field House's proximity to the University of Iowa's renowned academic medical center is ideal for students pursuing pre-professional programs like medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, optometry, podiatry, and dentistry, as well as academic careers in biomedical or physiological science.

New Health Sciences Academic Building is on its way
The new building, which began construction in summer 2023, will be the new home of three important university departments: Health and Human Physiology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science. This six-story, $249 million facility will become a hub for innovative teaching and learning, community outreach, engagement in experiential education, and cutting edge biomedical clinical community health-related research. The building, which is currently scheduled to be completed in 2026, will also be the first to bring together the Carver College of Medicine and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
