Degree: BA Health and Human Physiology (Health Studies) and Certificate in Public Health
Year: Fall 2021
I graduated in December 2021 and was able to start working at Northwestern University in January. I am grateful for the HHP program for guiding me to get to where I am today. I am a Research Study Assistant for the Fienberg School of Medicine in the Preventive Medicine Research Clinic. I hope to attend graduate school there in the future.
My favorite courses at Iowa were Understanding Human Disease, Health Services, and Writing for Human Physiology. I can confidently say these courses assisted me to have the knowledge I have now in my professional career. The HHP program ties the aspects of public health in well, which made me want to get a certificate in public health and even want to pursue the topic further into graduate school.
My advice to current students is to take advantage of the healthcare/HHP resources Iowa has to offer. I would not be where I am today without them. I volunteered at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and was dedicated to the same unit throughout my entire college experience, and it was one of the best decisions I made. Additionally, the faculty within the HHP department was highly resourceful. I had an internship through Green Counseling Services in Coralville as an undergraduate Research Assistant. I could not have done this without the assistance of the HHP Internship Director helping me find the best internship for my interests. This internship with Dr. Green was the foundation for my now post-graduation position at Northwestern. Lastly, I was a student phlebotomist for almost two years at UIHC which was one of my favorite jobs. I was able to work closely with peers sharing my same interests and using those medical skills at my current job on an everyday basis. I highly recommend becoming as familiar as you can in the hospital setting at Iowa. It is the best place to learn and work. I could not be more thankful for the HHP professors and staff. Go Hawks!!
