The University of Iowa Pomerantz Career Center named Anna Stanhewicz, assistant professor in the Department of Health and Human Physiology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the 2025 Student Supervisor of the Year. Selected from 89 nominees representing 1,481 campus supervisors, Stanhewicz was nominated by graduate student Ruda Lee, third-year PhD student, in Stanhewicz’s Microvascular Physiology Lab for her exceptional leadership and dedication to student success.
In her nomination letter, Lee highlighted the depth of Stanhewicz’s mentorship and her support throughout her research experience.
“Professor Stanhewicz has provided valuable support, ensuring that I not only adapt to my research environment but also thrive in it,” Lee wrote. She also reflected on how Stanhewicz guided her through challenges, sharing, “During those moments of frustration of self-doubt, her response was simple yet deeply reassuring: ‘It’s okay. Mistakes happen. That’s why I’m here.’”
Stanhewicz’s commitment to providing mentorship that fosters both professional and personal growth has made a lasting impact on Ruda and other students and is noticed by leaders in her department.
“Professor Stanhewicz is highly deserving of this award, and I am extremely happy that she is receiving this well-deserved recognition,” said Gary Pierce, chair and professor in the Department of Health and Human Physiology.
In recognition of her achievement, Stanhewicz will be honored during National Student Employment Week, April 14-18, 2025, and is invited to the Career Impact Awards event on Wednesday, May 7, at the Levitt Center from 3-5 p.m.
