Gyurin Kim

By Naomi Martinez

Gyurin Kim studied extensively in South Korea before coming to the University of Iowa to work toward her doctorate. Kim received a Bachelor of Arts in Human Movement Studies from Ewha Womans University in South Korea, an M.A. in Sport Management from Seoul National University (South Korea), and an M.P.H. in Health Policy and Management from Emory University.

Kim is currently a doctoral student in Kara Whitaker’s Physical Activity and Women’s Health Lab. Whitaker is an associate professor and graduate studies director in the Department of Health and Human Physiology in the College of Liberal Arts and Science.

Kim joined Whitaker’s lab because she is passionate about promoting healthier lives among women and children by advocating for increased physical activity to prevent obesity.

Read on to learn more about Kim’s home country, experience, and advice for other incoming international students in this Q&A.

What is one unique thing about your home country?

One unique aspect of my country is its advanced technology infrastructure, including high-speed internet and widespread digital systems in everyday life. Many services are digitized, even at bus stops, which often feature heated seating in winter, solar-powered roofs, or misting systems in summer for comfort.

How long have you been in the United States? In Iowa? What was the biggest adjustment you faced when moving to Iowa?

I've been in the States for almost four years, and Iowa has a more rural vibe compared to Atlanta, where I spent two years for my master's. It’s not as much of a bustling city, so I had to adjust a bit when I first arrived here.

What is your favorite food?

I really enjoy Thai food as well as all kinds of hamburgers.

What language(s) do you speak?

Korean and English.

What is a fun or unique fact about you?

A fun (or maybe not-so-fun) fact about me is that I’ve dyed my hair in all the rainbow colors — though not all at once! I’ve had half-green and half-pink hair, and at one point, red, orange, and yellow altogether. I still like hair dye, but I’m not as interested now since I’ve tried just about every color!

What is one piece of advice that you would give to other incoming HHP international students?

Don't worry, no matter what it is! Everyone in HHP is so kind and supportive, so there's nothing to stress about.
